Happy Birthday Grandma

Happy birthday to my grandmother!!! She would be 120 years old today.  Hard to believe she has been gone for 45 years and grandpa for 60 years.  But what a life and adventures they had!  They farmed but still had a desire to travel.  They farmed in South Dakota, he was a very smart farmer and an even smarted cattleman.

In sorting through the stuff I left at Dad's house I have found some real treasures like Grandma Selma's travel diaries.  They are getting fragile and in order to preserve their contents I am transcribing them into a blog for you all to read or not.  The first diary that I copied was their trip to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933 by train.  I have typed Selma's words as she wrote them, there are occasional words or phases that would not be considered politically correct today so don't be critical. 'Politically correct' had not been strung together back then.  It's a slice of my family history that I am  sharing with you.

Some of these notebooks are notes that Selma used for garden club or church presentations.  I changed the font when I added things from a second source,  I used courier font when I have added my own words and in clarifying something or how someone was related. Other notebooks have drawing or notes by Arlene, Geneva, Duane and possibly grandkids.   She kept track of how much they spent on gasoline, lodging and sometimes meals, the cent sign has disappeared from the keyboard I have used the lowercase c after the numerals for the cent sign .25c for 25 cents.

I am so glad I did not go through this stuff shortly after Dad passed away because I probably would have tossed most of it  And so glad Mom kept it and didn't throw is all away.   --Ann--the keeper of the notebooks
